{"id":506,"date":"2008-10-09T07:17:59","date_gmt":"2008-10-09T12:17:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oranchak.com\/?p=506"},"modified":"2008-10-09T07:17:59","modified_gmt":"2008-10-09T12:17:59","slug":"it-almost-passed-the-turing-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.oranchak.com\/?p=506","title":{"rendered":"It almost passed the Turing Test"},"content":{"rendered":"<style>\n.k { background-color: #eee;\ncolor: #009;}\n<\/style>\n<p>This morning on AOL instant messenger, I got hit with some bizarre messages out of the blue:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<tt><\/p>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: Let's look at the world with respect to theta.<\/div>\n<p><b>doranchak<\/b>: ok, let's do that<\/p>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: what up<\/div>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: so who is this?<\/div>\n<p><b>doranchak<\/b>: i was going to ask you the same thing<\/p>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: and why am I your fellow prisoner? ha<\/div>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: and I am Adam...<\/div>\n<p><b>doranchak<\/b>: adam who?<\/p>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: Well now if I give everything away with nothing back then where is the fun?<\/div>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: remember you sent me a message first...<\/div>\n<p><b>doranchak<\/b>: no, i didn't<br \/>\n<b>doranchak<\/b>: you did<\/p>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: [06:36] DecayingCoho: Hello, my fellow prisoner!<br \/>\n           [06:36] JudgeKaos: what up<\/div>\n<p><\/tt>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What the hell???<\/p>\n<p>So, I start thinking, maybe this was one of those <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/TheGreatHatsby\">AIM robots<\/a>.  This type of chat robot scrapes messages from blog posts and other online content.  The robot then sends one of these messages to a person via AIM.  If the person responds, the robot sends the response to some other person on AIM.  When THAT person responds, the message is funneled back to the first person.  And so it goes, causing all sorts of confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s where I start to wise up on what&#8217;s happening:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<tt><br \/>\n<b>doranchak<\/b>: oooh<br \/>\n<b>doranchak<\/b>: are you a trout bot?  <i>(Ed.:  A <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/TheGreatHatsby#Trout_bots\">trout bot<\/a> is a variation of TheGreatHatsby)<\/i><\/p>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: no....<\/div>\n<p><b>doranchak<\/b>: prove it  \ud83d\ude42<br \/>\n<b>doranchak<\/b>: ahh<br \/>\n<b>doranchak<\/b>: you're a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/TheGreatHatsby#Coho_bots\">coho bot<\/a><br \/>\n<b>doranchak<\/b>: my mistake  \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: and one proves they are not a bot how?<\/div>\n<p><b>doranchak<\/b>: that's a good existential question<\/p>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: so you still haven't given me any indication as to who you are...<\/div>\n<p><b>doranchak<\/b>: my mommy told me not to talk to strangers<\/p>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: or where I would know you from and what would prompt you to message me<\/div>\n<p><b>doranchak<\/b>: hey, whoever's on the other end of this:  look up \"coho bots\" on wikipedia<br \/>\n<b>doranchak<\/b>: there's a bot funneling our responses back and forth to each other<\/p>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: nice so we were put in touch by a bot how wonderful<\/div>\n<p><b>doranchak<\/b>: yeah, these bots are annoying, aren't they?<\/p>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: very much so<\/div>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: I was wondering why someone just messaged me outta the blue<\/div>\n<p><b>doranchak<\/b>: yeah, i was wondering that too<\/p>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: I figured it was someone from the overnight forums at crackberry<\/div>\n<p><b>doranchak<\/b>: did you post \"Let's look at the world with respect to theta.\" somewhere online?<br \/>\n<b>doranchak<\/b>: the bot scrapes messages like that to fool people into thinking they are talking to real people<\/p>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: cant say that I did<\/div>\n<p><b>doranchak<\/b>: i wonder where it found that message<\/p>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: so you are a real person?<\/div>\n<p><b>doranchak<\/b>: yeah; \"<b>kemptcoho<\/b>\" is the bot.  it has two chats going on at once:  one with me, and one with you.  it's taking my messages to it and passing them along to you, and vice-versa.<\/p>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: one word<\/div>\n<div class=\"k\"><b>kemptcoho<\/b>: ANNOYING!<\/div>\n<p><b>doranchak<\/b>: agreed.  \ud83d\ude42<br \/>\n<b>doranchak<\/b>: well, nice chatting with you anyway.  have a good day!<br \/>\n<\/tt>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What a waste of time.  But it was interesting to experience the scam.
